Last week, Essie Justice Group, the country’s leading organization of women with incarcerated loved ones, submitted testimony to the United States Commission on Civil Rights’ investigation into bail and pretrial outcomes in the United States. Our testimony centered around the disproportionate harm that pretrial detention, and the use of cash bail in particular, have on the physical, emotional, and economic wellbeing of the 1 in 4 women, and nearly 1 in 2 Black women, who have an incarcerated family member in the United States.
